The Governing Board
Welcome to the section of the website where you can find out more about our Governors.
The Chair of the Academy Governing Body at Harris Junior Academy Carshalton is Mr Marvin Saverymuthapulle who can be contacted via the Clerk to the Governing Body.
The Clerk to the Governing Body is Ms Karen O'Brien who can be contacted c/o Harris Junior Academy Carshalton, Camden Road, Carshalton, Surrey, SM5 2NS
The role of the Governors is to provide support and challenge to the Principal and leadership team. This is sometimes known as 'a critical friend'. We help them to set and reach targets and to strive for excellence across the whole spectrum of Academy life. The two key documents used for this are the Academy Improvement Plan (AIP) and the Summary Self-Evaluation Form (SEF). The AIP sets out our strategic plan for the school, with targets that everyone works towards and the SEF sets out how well the school is doing and where we aim to make improvements.
Governors also fulfill a range of legal duties including:
- setting strategic direction, policies and objectives
- approving the budget
- monitoring the progress and impact of the AIP
- appointing, challenging and supporting the Principal
- safeguarding duty
- performance review
The full Governing Body meets once every term. At this meeting, the Principal reports to all Governors about learning, progress, staffing, financial and premises matters.
The Academy is a member of the Harris Federation. Ultimate responsibility for the Academy rests with the Board of Trustees of the Federation, (Federation governance details and scheme of delegation can be found here), but much of the work of the Board is delegated to the Local Governing Body (the Governors of the Academy). Some Governors are appointed by the Federation whilst others are elected by parents or guardians of students at the Academy or by staff. The details of the Governors at Harris Junior Academy Carshalton are shown below.
